Shigra Santa Clara

The Santa Clara Shigra reimagines the traditional Ecuadorian shigra through a vibrant celebration of color, nature, and handcraft. Handwoven from natural sisal fiber in a rich orange tone, the bag features a softly structured silhouette finished with a sculptural bamboo top handle.

Inspired by Mercado Santa Clara, this piece pays tribute to Ecuador’s markets and to the richness of our diversity and mestizaje. These spaces reflect the country’s everyday vitality, where produce, craft, and local traditions reveal the abundance and cultural identity of Ecuador.

Across the surface, miniature fruit motifs are individually handwoven in colorful toquilla straw, creating a playful three-dimensional composition inspired by the biodiversity and visual richness found in Ecuadorian markets. Each detail introduces texture and character while preserving the ancestral techniques that define the shigra.

Originally woven by women throughout Ecuador’s Central Andean provinces to carry seeds and agricultural goods, the shigra reflects a deep connection between craftsmanship, daily life, and the land. Olga Fisch transforms this utilitarian object into a distinctive contemporary handbag without losing its cultural roots.

The interior is finished with cotton canvas and includes a practical pocket for everyday essentials. Entirely handcrafted, every Santa Clara Shigra carries subtle variations that make each piece unique.
